A smoothing reactor is connected in series with a high-voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station or transmission line, or inserted in the middle of back-to-back DC lines to reduce harmonic currents in the DC transmission system. It also limits surge currents during faults, restricts the rise rate of DC inverse currents, and improves the dynamic stability of the power transmission system.
